Week 27

It is hard to believe spring break is already here, and over!

We started the week again with our fourth grade buddies. The fourth graders wrote their buddies name in bubble letters and the buddies had a chance to decorate each other's name tag to represent their interests and personality. They turned out great and are on display on the bulletin board!

This week we also introduced our new social studies unit -- responsible pet ownership. Throughout the week, students planned and created posters for the Oregon Humane Society poster contest. The first grade theme is "Be Kind and Love Your Pet." The first graders put a lot of creativity and hard work into their posters and I will be turning them into the Humane Society next week (4/1). After working on the posters all week, we had a visitor from the Humane Society come talk to the first graders. We also had a 4-legged visitor named Ranger come to room 112, it was quite a treat!

Week 26

Here are some highlights from the week in Room 112...

We started off the week with our 4th grade buddies! With the small numbers in both classes, the students grouped together and read stories. The fourth graders were very impressed by the first grade readers...there are some adorable photos below :)

In art literacy this week the students learned about the power of lines. They looked at comics and had a chance to make their own characters with just a few simple steps and lines. For one piece they turned the number 5 into a roaring lion!

To help us organize our ideas and our stories we introduced a story web this week. These graphic organizers have really helped the first graders with the writing process. They are so excited to share their writing with the class!

Week 25

It was an exciting week in Room 112!

We started the week celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday with Read Across America Day. All of the students lined the hallway at the end of the day and read. It was great to see all of the readers fill the halls of the school!

Our biography journals are filling up! We learned about Helen Keller this week. The first graders were eager to learn more about her and her perseverance.

The first graders have been writing great stories and really working hard on adding different features to their writing (onomatopoeias and dialogue). It is exciting to see them grow as authors and share their writing with the class!

Reminders:

3/9 -- First day with buddy class (Mr. Graham's 4th graders)
