Week 37

It has been an amazing 37 weeks in room 112!

The first graders presented their farm animal posters this week, and I am really impressed with the creativity and effort that everyone put into this project!

We had our HATS! musical performance for the Stephenson students and staff. The kindergarteners and first graders did a great job! We are looking forward to the family performance on 6/9 at 8:30am!

Field day was a success! Despite the rainy morning, we had a dry field day -- aside from the dunk tank and water balloons ;-)

Reminders:

*Homework folders will be going home tomorrow with the Multnomah County Library Summer Reading game and an optional math packet for summer -- you may keep the homework folder!

6/9 -- HATS! family performance @ 8:30am
6/10 -- Lunch in the classroom (no need to pack your first grader a lunch)
6/10 -- Afternoon desk clean out (your first grader will be coming home with all of their school supplies)
6/11 -- Last day of school!

Week 36

It was another busy week in Room 112!

We had our final art literacy lesson this week. Julie Plato did such an amazing job with the art literacy program this year and our final project was focused on what we have been learning about in math...Farms! The first graders looked at Grant Wood's pieces and then created their own farms using cray-pas oil pastels. They turned out really well and are hanging in the hall!

Our buddy time this week was spent finishing up insect drawings and making symmetrical bugs!

The first graders had a chance to rehearse with the kindergartners for their upcoming musical, Hats! They are looking and sounding great!

We ended the week with our Stephenson talent show. It was an amazing show :)

Reminders:

**Please make sure to have your first grader bring in a hat and a blue shirt in a labeled bag for the musical performance!

6/1 - 6/5 -- Volunteer Appreciation Week
6/2 -- Hats! Musical performance for students @ 8:30
6/2 -- Final library book due date
6/3 -- Field Day PM
6/9 -- Hats! Musical performance for families @ 8:30

Week 35

Here are some highlights from the week...

We started the week with our buddies! The first and fourth graders went on an insect hunt around the Stephenson playground. The entomologists were quite successful and a lot of them actually caught bees! After catching their insects they sketched them and then as great entomologists, they let them go.

The first grade farmers had a great time at Plumper Pumpkin Farm! They got to learn about bees, plant pumpkin seeds, go on a hayride and see lots of animals! A HUGE thank you to the parent chaperones -- the field trip would not have been possible without you!

Reminders:
5/26 -- Art Literacy @ 8am
5/29 -- Junior Achievement @ 10am
5/29 -- Talent Show @ 12:15

Here are some photos from the week -- thank you Jason Karls for the farm photos!

Week 34

It was an exciting week in Room 112...

We started our new science unit! The entomologists began their study of insects with mealworms. On Thursday, the entomologists got to go on a ladybug hunt outside in the Stephenson garden...there were tons of them! We also have some caterpillars that have joined us in room 112 and are starting their metamorphosis :)

In math, the first graders got to start purchasing animals for their farm. They have been calculating the amount of money needed to buy the land, pasture and animals for their farms. Their farms are starting to fill up!

Our new writing unit corresponds with our math farm unit. The students chose their top 3 farm animals that they wanted to research, and this week they were assigned a farm animal to study. They will use books and Ipads to research and fill out graphic organizers about their animal. We are going to have 20 farm animal experts!

Reminders:

5/19 -- Farm Field Trip (Remember to bring a nut-free bag lunch)
5/20 -- Late Arrival @ 10am
5/25 -- No School - Memorial day
